Location auto-detection on Windows 7

Post by par »

Hey, friends!
I'm back and ready to fight :)
Please don't post welcome replies here, only on the subject, I know most of you are glad YoWindow development just went on :)
I will do a special post about my Egyptian vacation soon.

OK, now to the subject.

When YoWindow is launched for the first time, it tries to guess your home location.

For a long time YoWindow was able to guess only the country.
A couple of weeks ago I have improved the algorithm - the location was detected by an IP address.
However this is also not the best way to detect the location.
The internet provider may be located in another city or even in another country.

Windows 7 provides a new ability to detect computer location through GPS and WiFi hardware.
This is much better than IP detection.
YoWindow supports this feature now.

I want to ask you guys to help me test the feature.
If Windows 7 is running on your PC please help.

If you don't have GPS, you may try Geosense software for Windows 7.
Geosense adds an ability to detect location by Wi-Fi.
With Geosense Windows 7 has found my location pretty good - the error was 1 - 2 kilometers.

Here's the test I want you to do.
- Uninstall YoWindow completely (make sure you have backed up your landscapes)
- Install the latest RC http://yowindow.com/rc
- Run YoWindow
YoWindow will try to pick the location.
Let me know if the location was detected right and if you have noticed any problems or errors.

Hi Pasha
Wellcome back
Great... I have done like you said (uninstall ... rc ...) and .... PERFECT it founds Sesimbra - Portugal correctly.
No problems
I am running Windows 7 (64 bit)
By the way do not forget about the colors for the PWS and the real name on the space you already have for it in the pws setup menu.
Tanks and if any other test needed ... go ahead

Thank you, great!
PWS is a different story, of course we will continue to move in that direction, but in some time.
Anyone else? ;)

Hey, Herman!
Do you know how far is Utrecht from Nieuwegein?
Do you use internet over WiFi?

I uninstalled and reinstalled yowindow as you suggested but it brings up my location as London which is 500 miles away...nearest airport is Glasgow Airport about 25 miles away...I use windows 7...have manually reset location to Greenock which is about 7 miles away but would love to know if you can get it any more accurate or is it always going to be based on weather at Glasgow Airport?

I think in your case the location is detected by IP of your internet provider, that's the reason behind the error.
