Mentally Challenged

Post by mick0311 »

I'm starting to feel really dumb...No matter what I try to do I can't seem to install landscapes. I even printed the provided
directions so I could follow them exactly.
I download the zipped landscape.
I unzip it to 'my work' Directory.
I start YoWindow, click on 'ADD', browse to 'my work' where the .ywl and sometimes .png file(s) are located.
I click on the .ywl file to populate the 'add' bar and click on 'OK'.
I've tried moving the .png file into the YoWindow sub-directories of .img and .image
When I go to "Lanscape" and click on one of the displayed landscapes, I either get a blank, dark screen or a screen
that displays half dark and half sky.
Only one landscape 'install' attempt has ever worked...Bryce Canyon, and I've tried the same procedure with new
landscapes, but none seem to work.
The default 'village' still works.
I know I'm doing something wrong and have spent many frustrating periods trying to sort out this issue.
I also 'donated' the suggested fee thinking that might have something to do with my problem, but nothing helped.
Sure could use some explicit, concise instructions or feedback.
Thank you,
Mick

Hi Mick,
of course we will help you and I'm shure we solve your problem together ;)
Perhaps it was a fault during the installation of Yowindow. So please download and install the latest release RC 398 (see obove in the header)

It seems that you are going the right way for adding a new landscape. After unzip the landscapexxx.zip file (best place to find it later is the desktop :) )
open Yowi >landscapes > change a pic into a new landscape > browse to the file you have placed on the desktop > open the .ywl file (you could also open the .png in the sub-file "img")
And then I hope the result make you happy :D

Try it out with the attached landscape I designed special for you ;)

 Werner, I used your ` 'special' version to load and configure in the same way all the landscapes
that fail to display correctly. It worked and that leaves me puzzled and questioning why none of the other landscape
files that I downloaded and configured exactly the same way will NOT display correctly.
thank you,
mick

Hi Mick!

one try to explain some things:

what picture a landscape is using is coded in the ywl-file.

Example 1:
if you see something like

Code: Select all

<data src="Lake.png" ... >
or

Code: Select all

<data src="./Lake.png" ... >
in the ywl-file, then a picture "Lake.png" must reside in the same directory as the ywl-file.

Example 2:
if you see something like

Code: Select all

<data src="img/Lake.png" ... >
or

Code: Select all

<data src="./img/Lake.png" ... >
in the ywl-file, then a directory called "img" must exist in the same directory as the ywl-file. Within the "img"-directory there has to be the "Lake.png"-picture.

The "src"-Parameter simlpy points to the picture which is used by the landscape. It's a path.

If you see only a black screen or landscape instead of a picture it's likely that in the ywl-file no picture in "png"-format is coded but a file with extension "swf".
That's a landscape in flash-format which you can only use if you place YoWindow as a web-widget on a website.
But "swf"-files can not be used in the desktop-version of YoWindow (it's a flash security issue).

So if you look in the ywl-file at the "src"-parameter, you know where the picture has to be for YoWindow to find and display it.

If you want, please try out some of the landscapes you downloaded previously and tell us if you succeeded or not (in that case please post the ywl-file or the content of it).

Werner, how or what are you using to look at the code of the source files you reference? and, I've tried moving 2-4 .ywl
and .png files into the YoWindow primarary directory and the results are the same....some are completely dark and some
are half-dark and half-sky.
My Directory Tree as the YoWindow installation defined is:
YouWindow
-data
-.svn
- Images
- swf
Landscapes
-IMG
Village
Language

thank you, mick

Hi Mick,

This is not a solution to why you are not able to install landscapes. Go to Landscape drop-down and select Turn your photo into Landscape. Instead of using a .jpg, use the .png . You will be creating a new folder with a .ywl in it. You will also have to adjust the horizon line yourself. Use this method only if nothing else works for you as you need to find out the solution to your question.

Werner is probably using something like Notepad ++ to read the .ywl file.

I hope the above helps you out a little bit.

Hi Marty, hi Mick,
this is the same way/procedure I explained before ... you need only the .png, nothing else. And normally it is not necessary to adjust the horizont level ... the automatic adjustment works perfect.

Mick, perhaps you use the point "add a new landscape" in the drop down? Don't use it! The easiest way is as Marty and I wrote.

For safety reasons I put the .zip file in a seperate file in my documents. So I was able to reinstall all my landscapes after reinstall Yowindow.

I must be missing something...you guys suggest that i click on 'Landscape', choose 'use photo' and convert .jpg file(s)
to .png files. When I look in the YoWinow Directory and sub-directories, all I have is .png files. No .jpg files visible.
I'm really feeling like an idiot...

And, I clicked on the option to be notified of any replies to my post, but that never happens. I have to manually
navigate to the forum, login, and go to my original post, then scroll through the replies....don't know what I'm doing
wrong with the 'notification' option.

Lost in ywl png jpg :)

I am doing the follwing to install a new landscape, try to do the same:

1. Download a landscape from the landscapes collection.
2. Unzipp it and save the .png file to the desktop.
3. Open yowindow.
4. Click Landscape.
5. From the drop down menu choose "Turn your photo into Landscape..."
6. Click next in the window that appears.
7. Click "Browse".
8. Select the .png file (the one u saved to the desktop).
9. Click Next
10. Click Next
11. Click Create
12. You are done.
13. If u want to experiment with the horizon level, Click Landscape>Edit Horizon Level... and drag and move the red line up and down, till u find the place that fits your preferences.

90 out of 100, steps 1-11 is enough.

Are u doing the above and u don't manage to have landscapes installed?

Hi Mick, nobody here in this forum should feel like an idiot :D It's one of our main rules.

1. As Marty and I wrote "... you need only the .png, nothing else". There was never the tip to use a .jpg format!
You cannot convert with Yowindow a .jpg file into a .png (or in the other direction).
To create a landscape allways you need a .png format.
Reason: only .gif and .png formats are able to show transparent parts of a picture.

Do you red this help from Pavel? http://yowindow.com/help.html#q15
So there are 2 ways to add a new landscape. You can use the .ywl file or the .png picture. In the .ywl file allways the pic has the .png format.
Both variations are shown and offered in the subdirectory "add a new landscape" and it makes no difference which way you use.

Can you please tell me which are the landscapes you have this trouble? As you wrote you could add my "special" landscape, but it was created in the same way as all my landscapes (and all landscapes in our collection).

2. Perhaps I don't understand your problem. But to post or reply to a topic it is allways necessary to login.
