Pavel once mentioned (in some post i admit i don't want to search for now ) that the screenshots width should be 700 Pixels.
But i think any smaller width would be ok as long as one can recognize the landscape.

Now I have been trying to make more. Unfortunately, I can't seem to make background on the new ones to be transparent with Gimp. I followed same directions to no success. Is their another simple program that could be recommended (free of course).

Unless I am missing a step, I don't believe so. Because I have it printed out and follow the steps, and nothing.

Try using paint.NET

If you have problems with this ask Mallorca (Werner) as he is an expert on paint.NET . It is what he uses for all of his landscapes.

I think I've tried that one...grrr, have to search around how to do the transparent part.

Hi Al,

This isn't a photo editingsoftware forum of course, but I second Marty in the fact that paint.net does the job very well.
I've been using it myself for quitte some time now.
Mind you, that doesn't mean you'll get everything right straight away, it sure needs some practising and fiddling around, but it'll make you happier once you've succeeded

Maybe this will help you get started:

Open your picture (jpg, png, bmp, gif - doesn't matter, good quality does, though)
Then:
1 - select Magic Wand
2 - Play around with Flood Mode (Contiguous or Global) and/or Tolerance.
There's no real advice here, just trial and error I'm afraid.
3 - Select anywhere in the sky you want to remove and press Delete
Done :!:

I took a very clear and easy example of course, just to clearify things

Oh, don't forget to save it as a png-file, in order to use it in YoWindow!

Hi Al, as you can see I posted nearly 200 landscapes in this forum and the best software for "normal users" to remove skys is truely paint.Net.
Of course for more difficult pictures you need a plug in software for photoshop or equivalent.
If you have installed Office/Word 2010 it also a possibility to use Word! Yes indeed, Word 2010 has a feature to make parts of pics transparent and save it in the .png format!!!
It is very easy to use and the results are satisfied (I used it for some landscapes posted here).

But first try paint.Net and you will get famous landscapes
