PRECIPITATION - Intensity and Amount

Post by daddylito »

According to precipitation intensity and amount, which weather symbol/icon should be displayed
and what data should be displayed in the inspector panel?

Yr.no seems to very seldom report light or heavy precipitation.

Consider these two examples:
1) Normal or light rain/snow the whole day giving due to the 24 hours pretty much amount of precipitation
2) Heavy rain/snow during a short time giving not much amount of precipitation.

I would like to see data and symbols reflecting the amount!
Perhaps also an optional extra line in Inspector Panel for "Total Precipitation this date" (but with better English)

Which weather symbol should Yowindow use in these two examples:
1) Cloudy and precipitation greater than 0.
2) Snow or Rain and precipitation equals to 0

I would like to see either a cloud or the light symbol/icon in both cases, doesn´t matter for me.
I dont want to see a medium precipitation symbol.

Pasha has here got my opinion but what is yours!

Bernt, now YoWindow displays the symbol provided by yr.no for the given moment.
Do you want YoWindow to pick the symbol programmatically using some algorithm?

I want you to know, that there is an extended weather forecast information provided by yr.no.
I think the extended forecast is the key to solve the problems we have with precipitation amount.
Though, this is a really big feature.
I still don't have the time to do it.
Take a look:

We have such a line for PWS stations.
I have added a task to display total precipitation for the given date.

How would you rate the importance of this feature between 1 an 5 (5 is the most important)?

Hi Pasha, sorry for late answer!

What I suggests is something that I believe YoWindow have had some months ago!

Instead of using provided symbol when there is precipitation, the symbol is selected
according to the amount of precipitation.

I could try to make yr.no change the symbol selected! But how easy is that!

For me it seems stupid, especially in the forecast panel, where you have a symbol for the whole day,
that you almost never see the symbol for little snow or little rain. It´s always the normal snow or rain symbol.
Now a normal precipitation symbol have the range from "it might be precipitation" to " there gonna be a lot of precipitation"

Yes, YoWindow used to pick the precipitation symbol for the precipitation amount during an interval.
But I have realized, that is not an accurate method.

Suppose there is a light snowfall during the interval, or there is a heavy snow for several minutes.
They both produce the same amount of precipitation.
Which symbol to choose - light or heavy?

So I have rolled back to the symbols provided by yr.no

In a day-tile of the Forecast Panel YoWindow displays the weather at 15:00
When you click the tile, you expect to see the weather displayed on the tile.
So the symbol is for 15:00 of the corresponding day.
Do you like this or not?

The weather icon is taken from yr.no forecast.
If the icon in YoWindow will not match yr.no icon, the users would not like this.

Have you looked at the new yr.no api?
Switching to the extended forecast may solve this problem.

Hi Pasha!

I havn´t study the new yr.no api, but I will!

But what I want YoWindow to, in some way, do is
displaying/indicating the amount of precipitation,
especially in the forecast panel

My idea is by use of the weather symbols, as it was before.
It could of course be an additional option in forecast panel as wind!

But I don´t say No to intensity symbols,
but as yr.no works now, they don´t seem to work.
Also, it would not be good if the weather symbols have
different meaning in different places

... but I will study the yr.no api!

Hopefully I will return in this matter!
