Website-version: parameter for viewing direction

Forgive me my ignorance, but: what happens when you live on the equator?

I've never been there, but i suppose the sun (and moon) can be either north, south or directly above you, right?
In that case i think it would be best for everyone to make it possible to choose your viewing direction, or even better:
have the suggested automatic direction by location WITH the possibility to check/uncheck the standard chosen viewing direction.

What do you think?

I like your idea and it is not easy for me to argue what other people might think.
But a wind direction arrow pointing to the left when clouds move to the right might confuse some of them.

Geo coordinates nowadays used are as accurate, that either you live north or south of the equator.

But if you live in the tropics (at a latutude beteen tropic of Capricorn and tropic of Cancer), the sun depending on time of year,
can be situated slightly to the north or the south.

But in practice, the feeling must be that the sun goes straight up in the east, at noon is in zenith and then
during the afternoon goes straight down to the west.

You are absolutely right. Some might be confused.

But I have full confidence in the people that an eventually confusion will be short if they take the time and think a little about orientation/direction.

I once tried to fly a model airplane and at the beginning had difficulties to switch left/right when the plane was flying towards me. I had to push the joystick to the left to let the airplane fly right. But then i got the point and it was easy after that.

It's something similar with viewing direction and the winds.

We are all used to live in a north-directed world. So if we look south like in YoWindow, west-east and east-west are reversed.
Once you get this point, confusion is over

Reinhart, the example with an airplane is excellent.
And don't forget that YoWindow is a 2 dimentional world.
Rain and cloud motion direction is not informative at all.
The person who is really interested in the wind direction would look at the arrow in the inspector.

And yes, confusion between the picture and the arrow in Inspector exists, but the world is not perfect and some people are bad and I have to sell the program to run the project and the weather sometimes is not so perfect, especially here in Saint-Petersburg.

Buttom-line: I vote for Meerkat

Many people like me, finds YoWindow amazing, showing weather and colors that matches the actual weather outside. My window is at south so even sun and often the moon matches the screen.
So everything is great except that little irritating fact that clouds always moves in the opposite direction.

But there is a solution to that!
How wind direction affects the screen could be controlled by an option.

If the wind direction should be display as an arrow or perhaps NNE, North-North-East or 22 degrees could also be controlled by options.

Rainer found a smart solution, so my wish of change nov 14, seems now to be the behavior. GREAT!
But since we are discussing this, my idea of displaying wind direction in a other way, perhaps also should be reconsidered.

In the Northern Hemisphere people always look south and in the Southern
Hemisphere people always look north to find the sun or moon. .....
My suggestion is shelve this setting and determine the "look in" direction depending
on which part of the world you are in.(

What Meerkat wrote is the one and logical answer to all the questions and just the same I wrote to Pavel without reading here.

So I think we should take the Item which was added for daddylito and Ikarus to seperate between northern or southern hemnisphere. Default: Northern Hemnisphere.

Then, imho that item makes sense, sorry Daddylito and Ikarus, s. attached picture.

I suggest to put the default (Northern hemnisphere) at the top and southern at the bottom.

All this might avoid some misunderstandings. And I think this is what Ikarus meant from the beginning.

1) Substitute the wind arrow with short-code e.g. "NNE" (default for all)
2) Make it an option to change the wind direction between "Arrow" and "Direction" (on the desktop and in the XML)

VIEW:
1) The "VIEW" should be determined by the latitude of the location (default for all)
2) Make it an option to change the view between "Looking North" and "Looking South" (on the desktop and in the XML)

Is this going to make everybody happy?

Not at all, sorry Rainer.

1) If Pawel is able to realize that, it´s o.k. for me, too, but:
2) We should not ask: "In which direction do you look ?".
Imho, it´s better to ask people on which half of the planet they are living. The way it is at the moment makes it difficult for a lot of users because they don´t understand this.
And we should set the northern hemnisphere as default. I fear there are few more users on the northern part than in your beautiful (and warm) country..or in general, on the southern hemnisphere.
I know that som people under the equator might feel discriminated, but we have to live with that , sorry again.

I think you misunderstood me.
What I have suggested for the default view is that if the location is in the
Northern hemisphere then always look south and if it's in the
Southern hemisphere then always look north, unless the
user, visitor or xml requests it to be the opposite.

We both meant the same.
