Samsung Home Screen Live Wallpaper Black Text Issue

Hi. I was wondering if I could start a discussion on an ongoing issue with the live wallpaper feature of YoWindow. Specifically, using YoWindow's live wallpaper feature causes the text colour on the home screen to turn black; which makes it hard to read.

Firstly, here are the devices and software specs that I have tested this on:

Device: Samsung Galaxy Fold 7 (black text issue)
One UI Version: 8.0
Android Version: 16

Device: Samsung Galaxy Fold 5 (black text issue)
One UI Version: 7.0
Android Version: 15

Device: Samsung Galaxy Fold 5 (NO black text issue)
One UI Version: 6.0
Android Version: 14

What I have tried:
  • Creating a custom theme through Good Lock > Theme Park. But this does not work as you cannot manually select the home screen text colour.
  • Turning/toggling on high contrast in Settings (I never turned it on to begin with).
  • A lot of the Google solutions relate to older Android versions, so text colour choices in Theme Park or in Themes no longer apply/exist.
I think I may have found the reason (though no solution) why this happens. Apparently, in newer One UI versions, the home screen automatically switches the text colour between black and white depending on how "light" or "dark" the background is.

Notice if I pick a default dark background, the text is white:

Another way we can see this in action is if we go to the Wallpaper & Style picker, the text colour changes dynamically depending on the background "lightness" or "darkness":

A dark lock screen (black text) and dark home screen (black text):

A dark lock screen (black text) and a "light" home screen (white text):

And that last image shows the problem I think. If we go back to the very first picture in this post:

You'll see that the wallpaper is currently showing as raining. It is quite dark, but One UI is still using black text.

I think Samsung's implementation is that for live wallpapers, they analyse the SPLASH/START-UP screen of the app, if that makes sense, not what is actually playing in the live wallpaper.

To make it clearer, this is the image you see when you want to customise the home screen wallpaper in the Wallpaper & Style picker:

Notice how it is a static image, and is very bright? One UI deems this wallpaper as "light" and I guess it makes sense that it should pick black text. However, this completely ignores the live wallpaper weather brightness changes.

I remember this not being an issue with One UI Version: 6.0, Android Version: 14, as I have been using this live wallpaper feature since then. I am not sure what changed, but I do remember being able to read text perfectly fine with white text on a sunny live wallpaper background. It could be because I always apply the Dark Glass feature in YoWindow > Settings > Android Wallpaper though.

Anyway, I was wondering if a solution would be as simple as changing the splash/start-up screen to either something darker, or even making it a toggle in the app for people to choose? I.e., Light/dark splash screen toggle. It would essentially be forcing One UI to pick a certain text colour by changing the app behaviour. I am imagining asking for this change would be much easier than waiting on Samsung to make a home screen text colour picker available, but I am not an Android developer so I wouldn't know :Search:

(Side note: Is there a BBCode [img] resizer active for this forum? Links to images are not ideal, but using the [img] tag just displays the image at 100%.)

Dear loghadachild, that is an awesome problem report. Thank you so much!
Recently we have received a number of similar complaints.
It didn't come to my head that thumbnail may be impacting the desktop text color.
Let's see if this is the case.
I have changed YoWindow wallpaper thumbnail to a dark one.
See the attachment.
Please update to the latest beta of YoWindow 2.52.3 from Firebase app distribution site.
https://appdistribution.firebase.dev/i/20b8abf4460b8ecb

Please, let me know if the desktop text color is still dark.

Wow! Just wow.
I wouldn't guess the thumbnail was the source of the issue without your help.
Thank you so much!

Not a great decision to use a thumbnail colors as a reference to the *live* wallpaper background.
Wild move.

Definately. And I will be the first to admit this is only a problem if you choose to stick to the default Samsung One UI launcher. And this problem is NOT unique to YoWindow, but ALL wallpapers; live or not. (I was stubborn and annoyed that "something" was messing with my use of the live weather wallpaper feature, so I went to look for a solution.)

This issue can be mitigated by:
  1. Changing to a launcher that allows the changing of text colour.
  2. Turning on high contrast in the accessibility settings (but it messes with all colours on your device).
  3. Getting the developer of an app to change the app to suit your use case
I guess the problem now becomes... okay I prefer white text (by using a dark thumbnail). But what about the people that prefer black text?

As I said before, you would hope that Samsung would provide a simple toggle or choice for home screen text. Maybe even put it behind a Good Lock module (Samsung's Theme Park app apparently had this option pre-Android 14). But I felt posting this query directly to an app developer's forum was infinitely more constructive than "sending a suggestion through the Samsung Members app" as Samsung Support forums suggest

Thanks for testing out this theory though!

(3) FIXED

Thank you for providing the workarounds. This may help the people who to stumble with this issue in other apps.

Our live wallpaper may suggest a desktop text color to the system.
Google could add this feature in the future version of Android.
This seems like a preferred way to resolve the issue.

It's an extreme rarity to receive such a thorough and well thought out error report.
Thank you so much once again.
