HI,

that looks funny ;

Weather forecast in Montreal.

Friday Dec 3: sunny - picture ; sunny and no snow on the ground
Sat Dec 4: cloudy - picture ; cloudy but about 3 feet of snow on the ground
Sun Dec 5: snow .1 mm - picture ; snowing but not a trace of snow on the ground

Is it something to do with Yowindow or an incorrect forecast ?
Btw the longtime forecast are quite flaky and disagree with some other local sources but hey not Yowindow fault I guess.

Hi,
the explanation is very easy: when the temperature is below minus 5 degree Celsius then Yowindow show snow on the ground.

ho I see what you mean. Not very realistic though. Why -5 and not something like -1C or 0C ?
Does any weather forecast information include some sort of amount of snow on the ground ? That will be more realistic.

Unfortunately no, there is no snow-level information in the current weather reports (METAR reports) and in the weather forecast.
That is why we have to guess, and yes, we know this kind of an algorithm sucks.

Hi Par,

yes not so great but I am wandering if you could ask the community to pass on this info through your site someone.
I know it's far fetch but I woulnd't mind, probably volunteers around the world would be willing to do it too. Very simply set the snow flag for their ciiy with an approximation of the coverage.

We only need to update it if the situation goes from no snow to snow on the ground. Very seldom actually. While not perfect but better then now. At least most of the major cities would be cover.
Just an idea. :?

Thanks, we will think about it, but implementing this technique is very hard.
We have to choose new landscapes or reliable snow detection.
