My Locations "Disappear"

I have noticed recently that my locations are not longer there when I boot up my computer in the morning after shutting it down for the night. Why are my locations being deleted? Could there be a problem with my computer itself or with the software? Will downloading the latest version eliminate this issue? I'm running Windows XP with Service Pack 3
