Quitte right. To name one, my health hasn't been my biggest friend lately. I take it yours is still ok, considering the great amount of sports you're practicing?
I would like to quote back on you:

Enjoy the best time of your life.

and would like to add:

Make the best out of what is left of it.

Take care guys.

Hi Fred,

I don't know what your health concerns are, but my health has been a concern since the day I was born. I acquired epilepsy at birth and live on phenobarbitol. Rheumatoid Arthritis also runs in my family history. My cousin has early onset RA. I have the type that waits for you to be inactive. My 2 siblings were tall and thin and I was short and chunky. Plus I smoked.

My step son asked me why I smoked and I told him that I did not know but if I ever caught him smoking ...... I decided that day if the thought of his smoking got me that upset, I needed to quit. So no more smoking.

My last programming job was in a city 40 miles from where I live. An hour drive to work, 8 to 12 hours sitting at the keyboard programming, an hour drive home, and then eat and get some sleep was the only activity that I was getting. My RA attacked me full force and I could not use my hands to open or close much of anything. That is when I joined the gym. I went there just to get some flexibility and then I picked up a set of weights. The pain in my hands went away while I was gripping the weights. So I started weight lifting. It stopped the RA along with my having to go out and buy an entire set of new clothes. I am now the thin sibling and my 2 siblings are overweight.

There is only one problem with computer programming. We sit at a desk with our eyes looking at a screen and pressing the keys on the keyboard. If you do that for too many years, you stretch one day and throw a vertabrae out in your kneck. The chiropractor can only do so much. When I started rock climbing, you would not believe the healthy stretch that I felt in my spine. I have since found out that a lot of hospitals have put in climbing walls due to climbing's health benefits. Riding a true road bicycle is also helpful for the spine as you stretch out over the diamond frame while holding onto the drop handle bars.

Enough about my issues. I hope your health concerns are not of the type that keep you from being active.

Hey Marty,

If no-one has tapped your shoulder for your achievements before, than please accept mine :)

I too try to keep as active as I can.
I got an auto-immune disease some 8 years ago, which slowely but surely 'eat' my muscles.
But moreoever its also effecting my lungs, resulting in lungfibrosis (and I never smoked!)
I kinda recognize your RA descriptions in a way that I more or less experience the same, but the lungfibrosis is 'killing' me.
I cannot even reach my car normally lately which is less than 100 metres away.
I do hope to get back to the point before my last setback 1,5 month ago, so that I can again get some fysiosports.
Not that it looks close to what you are doing, but I'm happy with it. And I agree that any moving/sports are necessary and good for the spirit.
It certainly kept me morally going!

Enough whining from me.

Let's enjoy life again and count our blessings :!:

All the best to you.
Fred

Hi Fred,

Thank you for the tap on my shoulder.

But you are the one who needs a big pat on the back for your positive attitude.

I hope that positive attitude gets you back to your fysiosports soon.

Hi Reinhart,

The course studies at the branch college in my area do not give any classes on cobol.net . They also have a lot of prerequisites that you need to take for any programming class. So I have been taking all of my classes online. I do this mostly during the winter as all we can do is shovel snow or take classes. Summer is filled with mowing the lawn and staying active.

I have googled today on cobol.net and have found a lot of sites. What I need to know is what compiler, how much core, what price and so on?

I hope you can help me out.

Marty

Hi Marty!

i really would like to help you out to find some course for the winter but to be honest: i never was interested programming cobol at home.
So i took what my company provided: we have tools from Microfocus who also provide the integration to Visual-Studio from Microsoft. Maybe you can find something at the Developer-Section at Microfocus?

They also offer "Visual Cobol" - cobol-development integrated in Visual Studio. You can find some info here. Costs? I don't know. But there's a trial version available.

As an IDE you can use VisualStudio from Microsoft. There's a free version of available called "VisualStudio Express" (downloadable from Microsoft - look here). You can do all necessary things with it a programmer has to do.

I'm sorry i can't help you more
